Carpet - Selecting Cushion/Padding
A firm and resilient carpet cushion forms a good foundation for your carpet, retaining its texture and appearance and increasing comfort. It reduces noise and improves thermal insulation as well as cleanability. Cushion not more than 1/2" thick is recommended for most homes. If the carpet is a Berber or a low profile carpet, choose a firmer cushion.
There are many different types of cushion for different types of installation, and we recommend you replace padding each time you replace your carpet. Carpet cushion is made primarily from polyurethane foam, fiber or rubber and the type and thickness of cushion you need varies depending upon traffic levels and patterns.
- Bedrooms, dens, lounge areas and other rooms with light or moderate traffic can use thicker and softer cushion.
- Living rooms, family rooms, hallways, stairs and other heavy traffic areas require thinner, firmer cushion.
